K Q 10 4

What should you bid ?
With 6-losers and a 6-card suit, so you could jump overcall overcall 2 Spades. However, you have a strong 6-card suit and 16+ HCP. In this case, with so much strength it's more descriptive to double for takeout and rebid your Spades next time round. That way your partner will know you are very strong. The third option is to overcall 1NT, which would also show 16+ HCP. But that's not right in this case. The next question, B 0110 #5 shows why.

East opens the bidding with 1 Club. You are South with this 6-loser 17-HCP hand
( 6 ). 1 NT

Q 9 4
K Q 10
What should you bid ?
With 6-losers and 16+ HCP you could double for takeout and rebid your Spades next time round. That way your partner will know you are very strong. Unfortunately that's somewhat misleading, since you would also be promising a 6 or maybe 5-card suit. The second and better option is to overcall 1NT, which would also show 16+ HCP. Unlike in the previous question, B 0110 #4, you can do this because you have a good stopper in the enemy suit.
