He should bid his best suit, Diamonds, not NT. With 15-19 points, his plan should be to bid NT on his rebid, to show his exact HCP point count, which in NT is very important.

Well, South responds 1NT because he is too weak to bid his 5 card Club suit at the 2-level. If Clubs and Spades had been the other way around, he could bid Spades at the one level.

Either by bidding 2NT, or more likely by passing South's 1NT bid. When he hears his partner has 6-9 points, and not necessarily balanced, game is only going to be worth the risk if his 6-9 point partner has the max. 9 points. And there's only a 1 in 4 chance of that gamble coming off. And even then, there is possible exposure in Hearts. Too risky, especially as vulnerable. Although it might be worth a risk at rubber or teams, in duplicate bridge you'll be at the bottom of the results table 75% of the time....

Has the lead given you an extra trick by promoting the Queen? Is that a danger of leading away from an isolated King, even in a 4-card suit? Would it be wise to now lead to the Jack of Hearts, and hope West holds back his King? G
